26th & 28th Sept.....Scenic Coastal Drives in Maine...

One of the few lighthouses on this coastline that can be viewed from land...The Pumpkin Lighthouse, Deer Isle, built in 1854...
It's a fantastic day weather wise for our scenic drive today which takes us across to Deer Isle with typical views of the coastline and houses....

This is classic Maine coastline which reminds us of the west Coast of Canada...
This and next pic are of the harbour at the little town of Stonington...apart from tourism and the National Park the biggest industry is lobster....there are approx 3 million lobster traps in Maine waters...a lobsterman can have a maximum of 800 pots in the water at any one time....in 2014 124 million pounds (lbs) of lobster were landed....
A great sparkly view for our lunch spot...we had hoped to have clam chowder for lunch but struck out, no fish stalls in this area but we did have the best cheeseburgers we have ever had from Madelyn's Drive In....

The Deer Isle/Sedgwick large span suspension bridge over Eggemoggin Reach....We had time at the end of the day to call into a self serve car wash...even with our great nomadic lifestyle there are still chores to do....
Sunday 27th September and we are lucky enough to have a clear evening and a fabulous view of the lunar eclipse...
Being 5 hours behind UK the eclipse was at a very decent time for us between 9 and 10pm....
Considering I didn't have a tripod just Yorkieman's shoulder I am very pleased with the results :)

Monday morning and the second of our scenic drives , this time to the Schoodic Peninsular....
Yorkieman spots a bald eagle soaring but I was unable to capture it as I was the driver.......
Once again we've had a very picturesque coastal drive...
Winter Harbor Lighthouse...built 1856...
Lots of pull outs and viewpoints along the way....part of the drive today is Acadia National Park land but being on the "mainland" it is not as busy as Mount Desert Island...we heard that yesterday there were 4 cruise boats at anchor !!! The limit is supposed to be 2....
Again a perfect spot for lunch...avocado salad our fold up chairs and a peaceful  beach to ourselves...
Prospect Harbor Lighthouse...built 1872...
We have really enjoyed our visit to this pretty area, tomorrow we are having a day of household chores, getting the truck serviced and getting ready to head off Wednesday morning to our next stop...The White Mountains in New Hampshire...
All being well more from the Coastal Campers soon....

23rd-25th Sept....Acadia National Park, Maine...

A beautiful sunset for our last night at Salisbury Beach State Park.....

Early alarm this morning..outside temperature 43F brrr....but soon warms up to a pleasant mid 70's....mainly interstate today and several sections of toll roads but even with our extra axels minimal amounts...
From Massachusetts into New Hampshire and just 25 miles to the Maine State Border and a pit stop and information at the Welcome Centre....amongst other info we learn that 90% of the countries blueberries are grown in Maine...
From the I-95 N onto the I-295 through Portland, NH and this is the sort of interstate we like !!!
Camp Harris at Timberland Acres RV Park, Trenton, Bar Harbor and our home for the next 7 days...
Thursday 24th and our first visit to Acadia National Park approx 17 miles from our campsite....Acadia is on Mount Desert Island and takes up most of the island, there is another small part on the "mainland" which we will visit later in the week...
Today we drive part of the picturesque 27 mile loop road....although there are 2 big cruise liners anchored off of the island and many tour coaches in the park it is big enough with many pullouts and parking to accommodate us all....the previous pic and this one are taken from Cadillac Mountain at 1,530ft it is the highest point on the north Atlantic Seaboard....it was also a great place to stop while admiring the view for our lunchtime sandwich.....
Next stop is the Sieur de Morts area (lots of French ancestry in Maine) and a nice 2 and half mile walk via the boardwalk in pic below to Tarn Lake....

Day 2 in Acadia....chilly wind today and partially cloudy....
Egg Rock Lighthouse...built 1875...
We hike the coastal path....approx 6 miles in total....plenty of spots to walk out onto the rocks for better views...
Some of the coastline is quite dramatic...during the winter we would imagine it is very dramatic !!!! Top right of the photo is a lobster pot marker, Maine lobster is world renown and is the main industry here...
Thunder Hole....a naturally formed inlet, at high tide the waves create a deep thunderous sound.....
Much of this area reminds us of the west coast of Canada and Vancouver Island ....
We are surprised that this pretty miniature daisy like wildflower is still blooming as the temperatures are starting to dip...they are very prolific in this area blooming and growing in rocks and crevices...
Otter Cliff and the turn around point in our hike....Otter Cliff at 110ft high is one of the highest headlands north of Rio de Janeiro.....
Waves crashing onto the rocks and a good spot for out lunchtime sandwich....
This sign made us smile :)...
We've had a really great couple of days in Acadia NP...very picturesque ..tomorrow we plan to drive one of the recommended scenic coastal drives...
More soon from the Rocky Campers.....

21st Sept...Monday, Boston, Massachusetts .....

Tourists for the day to Boston....our train from Newburyport to Boston, the journey an hour and 10 minutes and excellent value at $10.50 return....it's senior's rate (one good thing about this ageing process) and no restriction on time of travel....one hiccup was that parking has to be paid by downloading an app to your phone...ho hum our pay-as-you go Walmart phone not up to that !!! Apparently they will invoice the vehicle owner if no fee paid on the day, we shall see...
Nice smooth ride and interesting countryside, marshy and very similar to Norfolk and the Broads area...
First stop is the visitors centre at Faneuil Hall, this has been a market place and meetings hall since it was built in 1742....the statue is of Samuel Adams, a strong opponent of British taxes and a leading activist at the time of the Boston Tea Party....

Paul Revere's House...situated in one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods of Boston....
Paul Revere's statue....The British Are Coming !!!
The Zakim Bridge over the Charles River.....often seen in one of our favourite TV series, Boston Legal.....

Built in 1798 the "New" State House.....the state capitol and house of government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts......
Time for lunch at Cheers.....
Hurry up he says I need a pint.....
A very nice lunch...but nobody knew our name !!!

Boston is a good walking city with self guided or guided National Park Ranger walks, we were surprised that there are not more historic buildings considering the history of the area but it is still an interesting city to visit......
The Arthur Fiedler memorial....created from 83 sheets  of aluminium by local artist  Ralph Helmick.....Fiedler was a long time conductor with the Boston Pops Orchestra...

One of the many duck tours....we didn't participate this time as been there done that in Nashville...
Last stop is at the USS Constitution & Museum...sadly under on-going repairs....
A very good day out.....pizza take out on way home from station....

More soon from the Happy Campers....
